Plan the episode

A live interview allows an immediate interruption, clarification, or change of direction. An asynchronous episode would need room between turns for the host to listen and decide what to ask next. It would suit a considered answer more naturally than a format built around rapid cross-talk.

An episode arc about a difficult decision

  1. Orientation: What decision were you facing, and why did it matter?
  2. Alternatives: What options did you consider?
  3. Evidence: What changed your mind or confirmed your choice?
  4. Complication: Which part did not work as you expected?
  5. Reflection: What would you tell someone facing a similar decision?

The opening would give listeners enough context to follow later answers. The complication would leave space for an imperfect outcome.

Follow-up questions

Follow-up questions
If an answer contains…The host could ask…
An undefined termWhat does that term mean in this situation?
A conclusion without an exampleCould you describe one moment that led you to that conclusion?
A leap in the timelineWhat happened between those two points?
An apparent contradictionEarlier you described one approach; what changed before the later decision?
A claim about other peopleWhich part did you observe directly, and which part is your interpretation?

Your episode brief

Episode question: [one issue the listener would understand better].
Context the listener needs: [two or three facts to establish].
This turn’s prompt: [one question].
Suggested scope: [one decision, event, or explanation].
Possible follow-up: [the missing detail, if it is still missing].
Do not assume: [the guest’s answer, a positive outcome, or a disputed fact].

Keep each turn focused on one question. Leave the next turn open until the answer arrives.

From turns to an episode

MicRelay’s Stitch feature can combine clips into a complete video, and you can arrange and preview the conversation and download individual recordings. Faceless Hosting allows the host’s questions to be recorded in audio form with text-based question clips.

  • Check that each answer follows the question it actually addressed.
  • Retain qualifications that materially change an answer’s meaning.
  • Resolve an unclear reference before using an isolated excerpt.
  • Use an editor for detailed finishing.

Keep planning

Use the podcast outline to test the structure on paper. The creator playbook covers a different task: planning a focused contribution for a standalone piece. See how MicRelay works, pricing, or the FAQ for product details.
